How to turn off the 'Post to Twitter' and 'Tweet <anything>' voice commands with NaturallySpeaking 12.5

Dragon Naturallyspeaking Macos

  • Chuck is using Dragon Naturally Speaking on the Mac, but he just found out that Dragon is discontinuing support for Mac.What are his alternatives? Leo says that Windows and Mac both have voice recognition and dictation now, so it may be that they discontinued it because the market is drying up.
  • On Tuesday, Nuance Communications, maker of the popular Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation software for Windows, announced that it had acquired MacSpeech, developer of dictation software for the Mac.

Go to the following location with Vista and Windows 7:

c:ProgramDataNuanceNaturallySpeaking11DataenxDat

And with XP:

c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataNuanceNaturallySpeaking11DataenxDat

Rename the file dragonbarisnctwittergrammar.dat to dragonbarisnctwittergrammar_old.dat

One Twitter command that will still remain is 'tweet that'. In order to remove/nullify 'tweet that' a different principle is used, if this command is an issue (which is very rare) then e-mail us directly for the solution.

e.g. 'Post to Facebook', by renaming the file:

dragonbarisncgrammar_old.dat

Then reload DNS user profile.

You will need to change the name of the language folder above for other languages than English, enx (English), deu (German) etc.

This is not an official Nuance technical note but just a hack to get round the problem if it annoys you as much as it annoys me.

Finally you will probably now get the following line in your Dragon log:

23:17:30 Error: Failed to load Intuitive Twitter Commands Grammar

or

23:17:30 Error: Failed to load intuitive Facebook Command Grammar

This is normal, don't worry. (Thanks to Rüdiger Wilke for the Dragon log information).

How to stop flashing orange taskbar buttons and focusing problems when starting certain applications and utilities by voice.
Mac

The problem arises in certain circumstances when DNS, as effectively a background application, tries to start another application and make it the active window. In certain circumstances Windows 7 will not allow such an application to become the foreground window and instead it's taskbar button flashes orange indicating it needs attention from the user, e.g. to make it the active window. It is difficult to ascertain the exact circumstances under which this will take place but this feature can be turned off by editing the following registry location. Please take the usual registry precautions when editing the Registry. Please go to the following registry location (the registry editor can be started via the Windows Vista and Windows 7 start menu by typing in 'regedit'):

Set the key 'ForegroundFlashCount' to '1' (normally set to 7)

Set the key 'ForegroundLockTimeout' to '0' (could be set to anything)

Restart Windows to complete the changes.

This is not an official Nuance technical note but a PCByVoice suggestion to get round the problem should it cause you any difficulty (e.g. many hands-free users find this feature problematical).

How to make sure that the Adobe Acrobat Save Dialogue is set as the foreground window when trying to print directly from any application to an Adobe PDF.

A very powerful and often used feature of Adobe Acrobat allows direct printing from most applications directly to an Adobe PDF file as opposed to a printer, this effectively allows a user to create PDF files for filing purposes etc. When using DNS to do this quite often the 'Save Dialogue' for naming and locating the PDF is hidden behind other Windows and occasionally the dialogue can lock-up. This is another side effect of the flashing orange taskbar buttons and as such can be turned off as follows.

Dragon Naturally Speaking Mac Alternative

MacSpeech Dictate was a speech recognition program developed for Mac OS X by MacSpeech. The first version of MacSpeech Dictate was released in March 2008 after being showcased at the Macworld Conference & Expo in 2008 and winning the Macworld 2008 Best Of Show award. On September 20, 2010, Nuance Communications, which acquired MacSpeech in February 2010, released a new version of the product, renaming it 'Dragon Dictate for Mac'.

MacSpeech Dictate ran as a Mac-native application. It used the Dragon speech recognition engine (v9 or v10), licensed from Nuance Communications. This is the same technology that powers speech recognition in Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the PC, although across platforms there are significant differences in features, functionality and integration. One major difference with MacSpeech Dictate was that it did not allow training by typing misrecognized words as Dragon NaturallySpeaking products do on Windows. Another notable difference was the lack of a transcription feature for recorded voice dictation, as found in NaturallySpeaking. MacSpeech released a separate product, MacSpeech Scribe, to handle this.

MacSpeech Dictate Medical, a version with specialized vocabularies for doctors and dentists, was released in June 2009.[1] MacSpeech Dictate Legal, with specialized vocabulary for lawyers, was released in July 2009.[2] MacSpeech Dictate International, with support for speech recognition in English, French, German and Italian, was released in September 2009.[3] Localized versions of MacSpeech Dictate are available in German, French and Italian.[4] It has never been available in Spanish.

MacSpeech Dictate products used the highly successful and very accurate Dragon NaturallySpeakingspeech recognition engine from Nuance Communications. In February 2010, MacSpeech Inc. was acquired by Nuance Communications, which continued development of native Mac speech recognition applications under the Dragon brand name.

A review/comparison to NaturallySpeaking for Windows[edit]

Reviewing MacSpeech Dictate 1.0 in the New York Times in January 2008, David Pogue concluded:[6]

So Dictate 1.0 is attractive, simple and Mac-like. It is not, however, as good as NaturallySpeaking 9.0 for Windows ($200). It lacks features like audio playback of what you said, a simple “add word” command, legal and medical versions, and non-English language kits.

It also lacks voice correction.

When NatSpeak makes an error, you just say “Correct ‘ax a moron’ ” (or whatever it typed); and choose from a list of alternate transcriptions. The program not only corrects the error in your document, but also learns from its mistake. Over time, the accuracy edges ever closer to 100 percent.

In Dictate 1.0, however, you have to fix transcription errors by hand. The company intends to add voice correction in a 1.1 update; in the meantime, though, your accuracy won’t improve.

The late beta version I tested has some bugs. The company intends to get these fixed by the 1.0 version’s mid-February release.

Even so, Dictate gets the big things — speed and accuracy — right, which may be enough for a lot of people. This program and the new Mac Office fill big holes in the Macintosh landscape — a landscape that’s looking brighter all the time.

Later versions of the software added the features listed as lacking in David Pogue's initial review.
